Artist Profile: Jenna Hupalo
Jenna is a professional tattoo artist and co-owner of 9th Gate Gallery. Originally from Dauphin, Manitoba, Jenna moved a few times before landing on Cape Breton Island in 2019. While currently a successful and award winning tattoo artist and business woman, Jenna’s career didn’t start in art like most others.
During Jenna’s early years she focused on hair and worked as a professional hair stylist for many years, using it as a creative outlet while appreciating and being interesting in art from afar. It wasn’t until later that she would pick up a tattoo machine and create a small space ship as a gimmick for her sister that she would catch the art bug.
She sought out a teacher and landed with Luke who passed on his extensive knowledge from years in the industry and together they focused on evolving as artists as a team. Now Jenna uses digital art and painting as her creative outlet and applying her intricately detailed designs to skin. Since then she’s acquired many awards but her most treasured is her first. First Place in Small Black & Grey at the Lethbridge tattoo expo in Alberta. The win was unexpected being so new to the industry and brought tears to everyone’s eyes.
Jenna focuses on the future and her growth into traditional artwork and towards realism. She pulls inspiration from artists such as Cassie Crimson and Lauren Ruthless.
